How To Get to San Pedro, Belize

Mahogany Bay Resort is in San Pedro on Ambergris Caye, one of the Belize islands. You’ll find that local Belizeans use these terms interchangeably, most often referring to the whole island as San Pedro.

Because of Belize’s small size, the only international airport, Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport (BZE), is located on the mainland. You will take an international flight into Belize City and then travel to San Pedro.

Getting From Belize City to San Pedro

After you arrive at BZE, you’ll need to travel over to San Pedro. Don’t worry—there are two different options, and it’s easier than you might think!

By Airplane

flightThere are several daily flights from Belize City to San Pedro, every hour in the high season (December – March). These hopper flights are less than 15 minutes long and offer a birds-eye view of the stunning geography of Belize and the gorgeous cayes. As you gaze out the window, you might catch sight of stingrays or nurse sharks. If you’re lucky, you might even see a manatee or dolphin! Plus, sometimes you can score the copilot seat (the airline often gives the copilot seat to a passenger if the flight is full or if you specifically ask) and get the best view in the house! Because of the convenience and magical experience, flying is the preferred way to travel to San Pedro.

Maya Island Air and Tropic Air are the two airlines that offer hopper flights to Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker from Belize City. You’ll find that these airlines are incredibly friendly and accommodating. If your international flight arrives late, they will often wait for you or automatically put you on the next available flight. It’s that simple! There’s no need to worry about delayed or missed flights, both local airlines know exactly who is coming in and who needs a connection — they won’t leave you stranded!

Note: You can also fly from the Belize Municipal Airstrip in Belize City to Ambergris Caye. Or, if you’re in another part of Belize (Belmopan, Corozal, Dangriga, Orange Walk, Placencia, San Ignacio, or Punta Gorda), you can catch a local flight at a municipal airport.

After your hopper flight, the airport you’ll arrive at is San Pedro, Ambergris Caye (John Greif II Airport – SPR). When you stay with us at Mahogany Bay Resort & Beach Club, our reservations team is always happy to arrange a taxi ride on your behalf in the days before arrival. Or, you can just hop into any cab waiting at the airport, tell them you’re staying at Mahogany Bay Resort, and they’ll get you there in less than 15 minutes

By Water Taxi

water taxi belizeIf you wish to travel to San Pedro by boat, there are regular public water taxi trips from Belize City. From the international airport, you will need to catch a cab to the water taxi terminal. It’s important to note that the drive from BZE to the water taxis is about 30-45 minutes depending on traffic, and typically a $25USD cab fare (for 1-2 people, plus $5 for every additional passenger). Although this option is a bit cheaper than flying, it requires at least two hours longer travel time.

There are frequent daily trips from the Belize City water taxi port to San Pedro and Caye Caulker. There are two companies that travelers can take, either San Pedro Belize Express (most popular because of its frequency of trips and bigger boats) or Ocean Ferry (smaller boats).

Insider Tip: You get the smoothest ride when you sit in the back of the boat. You’ll notice locals often go to the back while tourists sit in the front. So, if you’re prone to getting seasick, be sure to snag a back seat!

Getting From Chetumal, Mexico, to San Pedro

Are you visiting us via the border crossing from Chetumal, Mexico? The international water taxi is the best option for you! Thunderbolt and Water Jets International are two companies that make the trip from the Chetumal Port to San Pedro.

Note: These trips have been suspended due to COVID-19 and the resulting land and sea border closings. Please check with these companies directly for updated information about when international water taxi trips will recommence into Belize.

Getting From Caye Caulker to San Pedro

If you’re hanging out on our neighbor island Caye Caulker, you can easily get to San Pedro by picking up either water taxi at the Caye Caulker dock (typically runs until sundown daily).
